Hitherto, it was thought that premium SMS service is used only for mobile marketing and game shows on television. Sadly, it took an unfortunate tragedy like the earthquake in Haiti to prove otherwise. As every dark cloud has a silver lining, the upheaval in Haiti has highlighted the human side of mobile marketing. USA donated over million to Haiti earthquake victims and a major chunk of it was garnered through premium SMS service. Red Cross alone raised million through premium text messaging service.
Simple Texts helped send relief money to Haiti.
Simple and quick method
Probably, this was the first time in the history that such a huge aid donation was raised within such a short time; and that too it involved no physical efforts but a few presses of a mobile keypad.
It involved a simple interactive bulk text messaging from the aid collector agencies. They collaborated with mobile marketing services for sending premium SMS. Mobile users across the US received a text message asking them to donate to Haiti earthquake victims. All that mobile users needed to do was to reply by a text message if they were interested to donate. was charged to their mobile bill for the month. It was as simple as that.
It took a few seconds per mobile user to key in the reply, from wherever they are, and whenever they wanted. This simple and quick method invoked the sea of humanity and resulted in the deluge of donations.
Advertisements and endorsements
Amidst the plethora of text messages that the mobile users receive everyday, it was very likely that they neglect or delete altogether the message for the help. So, in order to pump up the visibility and response to the message various mobile marketing campaigns, advertising on national TV and celebrity endorsements were undertaken.
First Lady Michelle Obama turned spokesperson for the Haiti earthquake victims. She appealed to the people on a television show ’24′. The National Football League play-off games were also used as a platform for the appeal. Unbelievably, it resulted in almost half a million donations per hour via text messaging service during the games.
Crucial tool in critical situations
Premium SMS service and other mobile marketing tools like mobile advertising, mobile marketing campaigns, bulk SMS, etc. are proving to be very handy during critical times, owing to their wide reach, easy usability and anytime application. It has already proven beneficial in strengthening the bond of humanity. It has crossed all the barriers of cast, creed and color to amass huge help through premium SMS donations to Haiti.

Cholera epidemic is spreading to borders; the Ministry of Health of Dominican Republic confirmed that they had found the first cases of cholera patients.
The Health Ministry said, “The sick man is a Haitian citizen who recently returned from Haiti to Dominican Republic”
The source of cholera
The Cholera protesters refuse the rescue operations of humanitarian organizations, which would lead to surge in the number of cholera patients within the next few weeks. The mobile clinics in remote rural areas reported that many suspected cases have been found in many areas. United Nations Laboratory, Haiti laboratory and Santo Domingo National Laboratory are looking for the original sample of cholera outbreak. It is said that a contingent of Nepalese police is the source of the cholera outbreak.
Anti-UN riots broke out in several cities
The second largest city of Haiti, Cap Haitien has begun to emerge turmoil. The news reported, hundreds of Haitians have been arrested for taking part in the demonstration. The protesters condemned the Nepal contingent of United Nations and peacekeeping troops brought cholera into Hait. However, this hypothesis has not been confirmed by hard evidence
Many protesters attacked the Nepalese contingent police in Cap Haitien, they have not only fired, but blocked the street. Protesters blocked roads with containers; the road to the airport has been effectively cut off. Even the Backpack Bagsof the peach keeping offices have been robbed. They also set up roadblocks with burning tires, blocking the entrance into Cap Haitien. The journalist took the Digital Camcorder, to record many pictures.
In Hinche North of the Haitian capital Port-au-Prince, protesters attacked the resident of United Nations Stabilization Mission in Haiti, six peacekeeping soldiers were injured. The mob threw stones and Molotov cocktails to them. The United Nations humanitarian affairs office said they had mobilized peacekeeping force to prevent more violence occurs.
Protesters are organized with weapon
It is the sensitive moment for presidential election In Haiti on November 28th. It is only two weeks, but the tension situation caused by protest is worried.
”Protesters are organized and coordinated, they have weapons. For me, those people need to know they hindered us to fight against cholera with health sectors. What’s the worst; they let the lives of Haitians in jeopardy.” Nigel. Fisher, the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs said. He strongly condemned that the protesters impeded rescuers to prevent cholera epidemic, especially in the northern region of Haiti, where the cholera epidemic has developed rapidly.

Health officials confirm first case of deadly disease in camp for earthquake survivors as toll soars to 600. Health officials in Haiti have confirmed the first case of cholera in one of the earthquake survivors’ camps set up in the capital, Port-au-Prince. The development heightened fears that the disease, which has already claimed hundreds of lives, could spread rapidly among thousands of people living in the cramped camps – the perfect breeding ground for cholera. Al Jazeera’s Cath Turner, reporting from Port-au-Prince, said the first confirmed case was a 26-year-old woman. She was then moved to a treatment clinic where she was in isolation again and has now recovered. Her tent, her toilet and the area she was living in was sprayed and she is now back living in the tent and no longer a risk to the area.
“Now, in the last hour, the national laboratory, which is attached to the Haitian ministry for health, rang the camp manager and confirmed that it was cholera.
That’s the first incident we’ve heard of a cholera confirmed case. That woman was a group of six suspected cases. That’s the first one that has come back positive. We’re still waiting for results on the other five of the group.”
Since the large urban slum, the treatment can’t meet the huge needs. At least 600 people have been killed by cholera since the first cases were confirmed about two weeks ago. More than 7,000 others are receiving treatment. Haiti’s health ministry said the disease had become a threat to the entire nation of 10 million people.
“Now it is our duty as citizens to help solve this problem, which has gone from being an urgent humanitarian matter and gone to the level of national security,” Dr Gabriel Timothee, the ministry’s executive director, said during a televised news conference. The disease, spread when infected faecal matter contaminates food or water, is treatable mainly by rehydrating the sick with safe water mixed essentially with salt, sugar and potassium. Antibiotics also are used sometimes.
But decades of failing and often regressing infrastructure – wracked by political upheaval, unbalanced foreign trade, a 1990s embargo and natural disasters – have left millions of Haitians without access to clean water, sanitation or medical care.
“To Haiti’s disease, we should assist them in treatment, since we share one world, we should help with each other, and make the world more harmonious. On the other side, except paying attention to Haiti disaster, we all should take care about ourselves, as the weather changed often during this time, please remember to care about your family health problem, avoid catching a cold”, the chief executive of Dinodirect Company said. Dinodirect Company is the representative of all the enterprises which assist Haiti to overcome this disaster.
This is the time to help, to reach out, to be “human” again, irrespective of the boundaries of geography, color and race. This is the time to give.
People have been uprooted, their familes destroyed, friends missing, presumed dead, their life savings gone – all within the 12 minutes the quake lasted. People are now living in make shift tents, water and food are scarce, hunger & poverty rampant. Diseases are starting to spread and would soon reach catastropic levels. World bodies are starting to help out but the much more is needed.
All of us, at the other side of the world, as we watch the horror unfold should get out of our cozy beds, from the warmth of our homes, the comforting arms of our familes and start to contribute in any meaninful way as we can. It does not matter how big or small our contributions are – it all matters and helps. Little drops of water indeed makes up an ocean! So, get up, get going, start giving!
We, at MyContextualAds would like to do our share too. We announce that we would contribute 20% of all revenues that we generate for ourselves for the next three months. (This would not affect the pay-out percentages to our publishers – only ours!)
We would use any one of the agencies mentioned in the page to make the contributions. We would urge you too also consider making a donation.
This is the least, the very least that we can do for the people of Haiti
Haiti’s cholera epidemic has returned, with many new cases reported in the capital, Port-au-Prince. In one neighbourhood, aid organisation Oxfam says the number of cases has tripled since the epidemic reached its peak last year. Al Jazeera’s Rob Reynolds looks at how health systems have failed to curb the disease.
Donating by Your Cell Phone is Great. But, is the Money Getting There Fast Enough
How fast do Haiti cellphone donations work?
Many of us have seen the commercials about donating to Red cross for Haiti via cell phone. How well does this system work though?
So far Red Cross has raised over ,000,000. This is great, except for one problem. We pay our phone bills once a month, and after that it will take some time for that money to be paid by the cell phone companies. After all this time we are looking at at least a month before any of that money reaches Red Cross. It will then take more time for Red Cross Get the money to the right place. Unfortunately Haiti is in desperate need of funds in a very quick manner.
All of the cell phone carriers are looking for ways to speed this up, but Verizon has had a great idea. They have given million dollars from their pocket to Red Cross before any cell phone bills are sent. If more of the cell phone carriers follow in these footsteps, it will be a big step towards saving and recovering the lives of the people of Haiti in a timely fashion.
You can donate using your cell phone by texting the word “Haiti” to the number 90999. This will automatically charge a pledge to your phone bill.
If you are not into the cell phone donating or you want your money to be received quicker, here is a list of the top 5 charities you can donate to, as rated by the American Institute of Philanthropy.
Seeing the poor, the hungry, the exploited, the abused, the marginalized, any person can easily be discouraged. But this poem give us a lot of hope and each of our contribution can always make a lot of difference.
My child, I can feel the anguish of your heart. You are concerned about the hungry in the world, the millions who are starving… and you ask: “What can I do?” My answer is: FEED ONE!!
And you grieve for all the helpless children murdered by abortion and starvation and disease every day… and you ask: What can I do?” And I say: SAVE ONE!!
And you are haunted by the cold, lost, homeless people who wander the unfeeling roads all over the world… and you ask: “What can I do?” And I say: SHELTER ONE!!
And you feel compassion for those who suffer pain, sorrow and despair… and you ask: “What can I do?” And I say: COMFORT ONE!!
And your heart goes out to the lonely, the abused, the exploited, the addicted, the helpless, the enslaved… and you ask: “What can I do?” And I say: LOVE ONE!!
Remember this, my child: Two thousand years ago, the world was also filled with people who were suffering and dying, just as it is today. And when the helpless and the hopeless called out to Me, their Heavenly Father, for help and mercy, I sent a Savior – Just ONE SAVIOR!!
Hope, Victory, Salvation began with Just One SAVIOR!! And today – If you do what I say… what a different world it would be!
You may have heard about “Operation Christmas Child” – an initiative of the non-denominational Christian charitable organization Samaritan’s Purse. It is a fun way to give a gift to a child in a developing country. You take a shoebox, or pick up a box from your local collection center (visit the website to find the location of the collection center closest to you) and fill it with small gifts for a child in a poverty stricken part of the world.
This year, Operation Christmas Child has committed to sending at least 250,000 shoeboxes to Haiti, in addition to meeting their commitments to all other countries. They have added a feature on their website to make it easy to pack a shoebox online for a child in Haiti. All you do is visit their website, choose items from the list to purchase for your shoebox, pay online, and volunteers will fill your shoebox for you.
So whether you choose to fill a shoebox yourself this year or fill one online, you still get to choose the age and gender of the child you would like to receive your gift. The age categories are 2-4, 5-9, and 10-14. Fill the box with age appropriate toys, school supplies, and hygiene items. This can be a great project to do with your kids. If you are filling a box online, the website allows you to either choose the gifts, or purchase a “base box” that has a list of gifts already made up, and all you have to do is pay for them.
There are a few items that are not allowed in the boxes. Every box is checked by volunteers (if you choose to gift wrap the box, you need to wrap the lid separately) so that if these items are added by mistake they will be removed: anything that could melt or freeze, break or leak, used items, or anything that might scare or harm a child. Do not include food items except hard candy.
Samaritan’s Purse also suggests that you include a donation of at least to cover the cost of shipping. If you like, you can include a note for the recipient, or pictures of yourself or your family.
I am a little late posting this article – the national collection week was November 15-21. Shoeboxes can still be dropped off or couriered to a processing center, and the online shoeboxes for Haiti are still being accepted.
